Assessment Description

This practical exercise assesses students’ ability to apply theoretical learning to practical, real world situations. In this exercise students must use a leading SaaS data analytics package, IBM Watson, to analyse a real life dataset. Watson can give interesting visualisations and insights, however, the data scientist needs to be able to differentiate between what is useful and what are machine driven artefacts.

  1. Sign up for the free version of Watson.

  1. Select a Dataset and Add to your Watson platform. Some Datasets are relatively simple, whilst the more complex ones allow for a richer analysis. [The sample Datasets can be downloaded from Moodle]

[Don’t use the HR_Training file as this was used as the example in the lecture and class practical.]

  1. Study your Dataset in Excel. Understand the metadata (column headings) and any definitions given in Worksheet 2 in the file. Think about the related interesting business questions. Design THREE (3) questions to Explore. Provide a brief report on each question including your graphic and analysis. (Use the Share tool to download a png version of each graphic for clarity.)

  1. Use Predict to study one variable in your Dataset. Report on the result including the Watson graphic.

  1. Use Assemble to construct a useful Dashboard. Again export as a png file for report and briefly explain its design.

Your report should include the following:

  1. Cover sheet (Make sure that you clearly identify which Dataset that you have chosen.)

  1. One variable analysed with Predict

  1. One dashboard designed with Assemble

  1. A conclusion with your views on how well Watson analysed your dataset.

Ensure that your report does not exceed 10 pages
Referencing and Plagiarism
It is essential to use IN TEXT referencing. If you are using the exact words from a reference then you must use quotation marks.
You can use Chicago Style referencing with numbers, with a listing at the end of the essay. Microsoft Word has an EndNote plugin that makes this style very easy and clear to follow. ( )
Alternatively, you can use the more traditional Harvard style, which is more verbose. .
Remember that this is a Turnitin assignment and plagiarism will be subject to severe penalties. Please refer to the AIH Academic Misconduct Policy:
