D3 Demonstrate convergent/lateral/ creative thinking Alternative and innovative approaches have been considered To achieve D3 learner need to provide the configurations using port security. [AC 2.2 & 2.3] And you need to demonstrate the use of Wireless Management and Monitoring [AC 4.4] Assignment title Switch Engineering Purpose of this assignment Scenario: In today’s information-based economy, information is taken as power and control. To get the right information at the right time to the right people through the right channel is vital in any organization’s decision making processes. Network communication is one of the domains which are pivotal to the information and communication technology. A computer network involves many devices/media responsible for sharing (sending and receiving) data utilizing the transmission media. The internet is an example of such a network which spans globally. Apparently, the practical realization, management, maintenance, delegation, security and standards etc. of any network are the key challenges. Assume that Creative Consultant is a UK based Management Consultancy Company having its branches in operation over many countries in Europe, Asia and Australia. Recently the company has been successful to obtain the management consultancy of two major national banks in USA. In line with this, next month the company is going to establish a New York based office consisting of admin, accounts, finance, research department each consisting of 15, 18, 42 and 35 employees respectively. The proposed site consisting of four floors in a multi-storeyed building has already been acquired in the heart of the city. Description of the problem to be solved Assume that you have been working as a network consultant in the company and based at headquarter in London and have been temporarily deployed to produce a plan & design document to set-up a network equipping the proposed office with a file server, intranet server, mail server and connectivity to the head office. Additionally, you are also required to document a list and specification of the required network technologies, network hardware etc. (in the context of switch engineering). Your plan and design document should address the following issues clearly with proper suggestions substantiated by right justification in the context of switch engineering. Task 1 – Investigate the LAN Switching 1. Analyse the concept of Internetworking and the devices used [AC 1.1] 2. Evaluate the concept of Switching. [AC 1.2] 3. Taking an example of Cisco Switch, demonstrate the basic Switch Configuration [AC 1.3] Note: [For AC 1.1, you need to present findings on with Internetworking concepts and the devices used such Hub, Switch, and Bridge. For AC 1.2, you need to present about Layer 2 & Layer 3 switch and explain on how a switch works For AC 1.3, you need to present the configurations on how you set password, change switch name, change interface/ ports operation such as half duplex, half duplex, setting ip address and gateway for remote login, deleting flash file, etc.] [Assessment Criteria: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3] Task 2 – Investigate and design Switching Security 1. Examine the Network Security Concepts. [AC 2.1] 2. Explain the different types of VLAN attacks. [AC 2.2] 3. Review Random Frame-Stress Attacks. [AC 2.3] Note: [For AC 2.1, you need to present findings on network Security, security threads, QoS, Monitoring, Remote monitoring. For AC 2.2, you need to present findings on VLAN attacks like VLAN hopping attacks, Address Resolution Protocol attacks, VLAN Trunking Protocol att
ack, etc. For AC 2.3, you need to present findings on Random Frame-Stress attacks.] [Assessment Criteria: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3] i. Task 3 – Understand the concepts underlying Ethernet Switching Network Design 1. Analyse the Ethernet Switching. [AC 3.1] 2. Contrast the difference between layer 2 and Layer 3 Switching. [AC 3.2] 3. Evaluate on the industrial application of Ethernet Switching. [AC 3.3] 4. Demonstrate Ethernet switch Network Design of the above case study using the concepts of VLAN. [AC 3.4] Note: [For AC 3.1, you need to present findings on Origin of Ethernet, 1st Ethernet, and Ethernet standardisation, 3com Ethernet, Star LAN, 10 BASE-T, Ethernet Switching, Fast and Gigabit Ethernet. For AC 3.2, you need to present the benefits of a Layer 2 Switch in a Network & Benefits of a Layer 3 Router in a Network. For AC 3.3, you need to present on the use of Ethernet switching and its advantages.
