Written Report: Sustainability frameworks and circularity strategies-C2C certification

Value:                                                  45%

Due Date:                                            Week 13 (Sunday)

Length:                                                2000-2500 words

Assessment Description

Responsible production and consumption are among the emerging considerations in the textile and garments industry. Global brands are conscious of their material sourcing and suppliers’ sustainability performance. As consumers’ awareness of sustainability issues is growing so is pressure on corporates about their sustainability performance. Cradle to Cradle (C2C) certifications are authentic and robust measures of brands’ sustainability performance and evidence of circularity associated with life cycle assessment.

In this assessment, you are hypothetically assigned the role of Circularity Consultant of Alpha Garments (a pseudonym for a famous global brand of designer jeans) and tasked to lead activities that might result in C2C Gold Level Certification of their premium brand TaroDen Jeans (again a pseudonym). Alpha Garments is involved in the creation of premium jeans fabric and ultimate product for a global consumer base, with a focus on innovative ideas and designs while ensuring sustainable impact on earth and people.

You would examine standards of C2C certification, requirements of lifecycle assessment of TaroDen Jeans, and devise a strategy that might result in certification of the brand at the required level. In addition to textbook chapter 11, unit slides, and reading material of week 8, the following resources can support the completion of this assessment:

The specific tasks and requirements along with the suggested format of the assessment are explained below:

Format and Specific Tasks

  1. Introduction: Provide a background of C2C certification, requirements, and levels. Give some examples of C2C certified products from the garment industry. (200-250 words)
  2. C2C certification strategies: This section is divided into 5 sub-sections

  1. Material Health: Explain what strategy would you adopt to ensure that materials procured for manufacturing your product are all sourced from ethical suppliers (responsible sourcing), are safe for humans and the environment, and are free from chemicals. Answering the following questions might help you develop this section:
    1. Where would you source your fabric from?
    2. What other materials would be used in product manufacturing and how would you procure them?
  • What are environment-friendly materials used in the jeans manufacturing process such as fabric finishing and garment washing? What strategy will be instituted to ensure that such materials adhere to C2C requirements? (350-400 words)
  1. Material Reutilization: Explain how would you design products made with materials that come from and can safely return to nature or industry? How would you ensure that you enable a circular economy through regenerative products and process design? Focus on the industry you are making strategy from and a bit of industry/product knowledge through secondary sources would help in the completion of this section. (350-450 words)
  2. Renewable Energy: How would you progress on working towards a future in which all your manufacturing is powered by 100% clean renewable energy. What strategy would you institute to promote renewable energy, reduce excessive energy consumption, and reduce harmful emissions (reduce carbon footprints of energy consumption)? Outline key tactics of your effective energy management system strategy. (350-400 words)
  3. Water Stewardship: Consider that managing clean water as a precious resource and an essential human right is vital for C2C certification so safeguarding water, ethical water consumption, and water recycling are critical elements of circularity strategy to achieve high standards of C2C certification. Explain how would you promote progressive water stewardship, conserve water with the help of structural and behavioral measures (for instance during the garment washing process), and recycle water as part of eco-finishing.

(350-400 words)

  1. Social Fairness: Through social fairness strategy, ensure fairness and design efficient operations for all people and natural systems, respect human rights and contribute to fairness and equity at the workplace and in society. Identify specific measures that you would deploy to achieve targets of fairness, equity, and a healthy workplace for your people. (350-400 words)
  1. Conclusion: Conclude your report by reflecting on caveats of your strategy and potential timeline that would show achievement of the target of C2C Gold Certification for TaroDen Jeans. Identify factors that may hinder the success of your strategy and contingency plan (200-250 words)

  1. References: Provide references to any secondary sources used, following APA or Harvard referencing style.
