labour force characteristics

Assessment item

Item 1: Report

Length: 800 words (+/- 10%)

Select one country (America) and provide an overview of the labour force. Discuss the implications of the patterns in your overview in terms of equity, and in terms of promoting efficiency and productivity in an organisation. This discussion should emphasise an understanding of the labour market and the macro issues about workforce diversity.

Some guiding questions to help you with your overview:

What are the labour force characteristics? For example, what are the patterns of women and men, different ethnic groups, people with disabilities etc?

In what industries do men and women or different ethnic groups work?

What occupations do women have?

What occupations do men have?

Who works for low wages?

Who works on casual or temporary employment or part-time working arrangements?

Following this analysis of the labour force, consider the implications of this profile. What are the issues that these labour force characteristics raise for society and for organisations?

You are required to use a minimum of 10 academic/scholarly (peer reviewed) references – these include books, government reports but must also include refereed journal articles. Other sources (e.g. websites) can be used and cited but are additional to the minimum of 10 academic/scholarly (peer reviewed) references. A list of references (alphabetically by author surname) should be provided at the end of the assignment. The list should include all the sources that you have cited in your assignment.

In-text references should be provided within the body of the assignment. Include page numbers for direct quotations only.
