ICT220 Telecommunications and Networks Task 2 Page 3 of 6 Background You are a systems engineer working for ‘The Shire’ city council as part of their ‘Smart City’ development team. ‘The Shire’ is responsible for maintaining thousands of kilometres of roads throughout its ‘suburban sprawl’ and semi-rural council area. Every year council responds to many requests for road repair not only after torrential rains but also as a result of general wear-and-tear. Because of continual housing development ‘The Shire’ needs to keep on top of this maintenance and is investigating ways to automate the monitoring and management of road maintenance. You have been commissioned to create a report on various options and technologies to manage and monitor road maintenance within ‘The Shire’ with the following functional requirements: • The ability to systematically collect data on the state of all roads within ‘The Shire’, • The ability to determine the state of the road from the data and prioritise it for repair, • The ability for that information to be displayed to council road maintenance managers who can then turn the information into work orders for crews, • Crews must be able to be able to easily find the road requiring maintenance and report on progress until the repair is complete. The maintenance may involve many different specialist crews (resealing crews, survey crews, etc.) over many days, weeks or months. In this report, you need to select or design two Information System / Internet of Things solutions. You should also compare and contrast the two selected (or designed) infrastructures / technology solutions based on appropriateness for the ‘The Shire’ city council area’s current and predicted future needs. You should consider: 1. Infrastructure E.g. Internet connection, LAN, Wireless LANs, Other wireless technologies (Bluetooth LE, RF, etc), Cellular/WAN, IoT specific technologies/infrastructures 2. Existing Technology Solutions E.g. LoRaWAN, OpenIoT 3. Data Storage and Processing Facilities E.g. Data centres, Cloud computing, distributed storage and processing The items listed in each category are not compulsory or complete. Some items can span across several categories. You have the freedom to include any item you feel important. When you provide solutions to each category, remember to explain their benefits to some of the following items: • Power utilization / storage • Cost (initial: e.g. of hardware, or ongoing: e.g. traffic costs) • Security / Privacy • Openness / Ease of use • Data ownership / Accessibility ICT220 Telecommunications and Networks Task 2 Page 4 of 6 Report Format Your report should be no less than 1,500 words and it would be best to be no longer than 2,500 words. The report MUST be formatted using the following guidelines: • Paragraph text – 12 point Calibri single line spacing • Headings – Arial in an appropriate type size • Margins – 2.5cm on all margins • Header – Report title • Footer – page number (including the word “Page”) • Page numbering – roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv) up to and including the Table of Contents, restart numbering using conventional numerals (1, 2, 3, 4) from the first page after the Table of Contents. • Title Page – Must not contain headers or footers. Include your name as the report’s author. • The report is to be created as a single Microsoft Word document (version 2007, 2010, 2013 or Office 365).
