Discuss a case study: “Milk or wine come rain or shine. Culture and politics in a Dutch-Belgian banking group after an international takeover”. Read it thoroughly and think about which theories could be used/applied to understand/improve the situation described in the case. Part 1: The first part will offer you a “practical” challenge, asking you to do something that will require you to devise a concrete strategy to deal with the situation described in the case, with the intent of improving the situation. For doing this you will find useful to draw on the ideas that we have discussed in the “Improving organization” lectures and tutorials. Part2 : The second part will require you to write a short essay examining the problem using one specific organizational theory / approach. This theory or approach will be one of those that we discussed in the first part of the subject. In this essay you must refer to literature from the subject (including references in Harvard referencing style). Referring to the literature you must avoid to merely repeating what is described in the textbook. This means you can include relevant citations but only in the context of your original writing and demonstrated application of critical reflection. You can do so both showing contradictions and debates in the literature, and by illustrating your understanding through examples. You can draw examples both from the article but and from your own reading and from your daily experience. Marks will not be awarded for responses that do not address the question, are not well planned and constructed, or are full of unsupported assertions (i.e. mere opinions). 1) Demonstrate solid knowledge (i.e understanding the key theories and concepts presented in the subject + be able to apply them to practice, as well as critique them i.e what are the strengths/weaknesses/taken-for-granted assumptions/challenges) of the subject (remember: solid knowledge does not mean repeating things over and over); 2) Demonstrate that you understood what you have learnt (if necessary, making concrete examples supported with appropriate referencing); 3) Be able to explain what you want to say. For example, it is not enough to know and to understand what an organizational structure is – you need also to communicate it in an effective way (appropriate language, examples, referencing, etc.); 4) Be able to structure your writing in a logical form (i.e intro, body, conclusion and logical sequenced paragraph structure). Part of the communication process consists in producing texts that are well written, well structured, coherent, and cohesive; 5) In addition to the following points, an outstanding work will also be persuasive. This means enabling your reader to see what YOU want to state (usually the conclusion you’ve reached) and then to follow your reasoning and consider the evidence you present. It calls for you to draw thoughtful conclusions and display a mature (i.e. structured, analytically sound) critical/questioning approach to what you have learnt. It calls for you to be analytical in your writing approach and not simply just describing the theory back to your lecturers.
