Context:
This assessment is prescribed to enable you to engage in the full process of creating a design
solution that causes social change. The skills advanced in this assessment include:
1. Identifying a real-world problem
DSGN6028_Assessment 1 Brief_T1_2016.Docx Page 2 of 7
2. Analysing the problems history, traditional solutions, and global impact
3. Designing a viable solution to meet its needs
The key understandings to be gained from this assessment is the ability to first create and
identify a problem evident across the specialised industries of individuals within the group,
and transcend the constraints of traditional solutions to effectively meet the end-user’s
experience needs.
This assessment prepares you and your group members for professional application within
the design industry by effectively working within a group environment and solving problems
in an inter-disciplinary way using non-traditional and innovation.
Instructions:
Requirements:
1. Students are to identify a common problem that is shared amongst the specialized
industries of the group members.
2. Students are then to research traditional solutions to this problem using case studies
and analyse data available for it.
3. An innovative design solution to the problem should be generated out of group
discussions which causes the most improvement.
4. A viability analysis should then be conducted on how this solution would be
implemented using a budget and a timeline.
5. Finally a document should be created which effectively communicates the research
and proposed solution which is to be presented to the larger cohort.
Preparation timeline:
Module 1.1: It is required for this assessment to convene as a group in Module 1.1, and
share (business, social and user) problems evident within each person’s specialized
industries. The group will then decide upon a single common problem that is shared across
industries. Research is to be conducted on the problem individually using case studies and
graphical data and statistics.
Module 1.2: Discussions will take place among the group in which solutions are proposed
before the most innovative and beneficial solution is chosen. The requirements for your
proposed solution will then be delegated among the group and the group will compile a
single document for each student to submit. Prepare the budget and timeline to ensure
that viability of implementation is addressed.
Module 2.1: Present the research document and findings to the rest of the class.
DSGN6028_Assessment 1 Brief_T1_2016.Docx Page 3 of 7
Structure of submission document:
The structure for the submittable document and group presentation should include:
|
A description of the common problem that is shared across different industries 1 x case studies analysed which contain the problem identified 1 x traditional solutions analysed via a competitor analysis study A description of the proposed solution and how it transcends current constraints A visualization of solution in the form of either: A short film, 3D/2D imagery or animation, poster / infographics visual design, hard data and statistics, textiles etc. A timeline of tasks for a 6 month period which include 6 x major milestone steps towards implementation Budget estimates for the above timeline of tasks (a viability study) |
| |
|
Assessment criteria:
You will be assessed on the following criteria:
1. The level of sophistication in the problem found as common and shared among
industries
2. The quality of the analysis of case studies for insight into the identified problem
3. The innovative nature of your group’s proposed outcome that transcends constraints
in the traditional solutions
4. The quality of your group’s presentation material in effectively communicating the
group’s outcome
5. The viability of the solution in terms of a budget and a timeline of implementation
Each student in a group will submit the same document to Blackboard prior to your in-class
presentation, and present to the rest of the class using Collaborate in Week 3.
