Topic 1:
To be sustainable a hospitality organization must be a
microcosm of the community in which it operates.
• What is the “community”?
Physical community: supporting local enterprises, local
population, environment, local government, stakeholders.
Virtual Community: social networks- (sharing Ideologies)
• Relates to social enterprise: driven by the good of the
community- social, environmental and economic.
• Relevant readings: 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 9.3.
• Supplementary readings: week 12

Using a specific tourism destination, evaluate the key issues relating
to sustainable tourism
and develop solutions for potential future
growth
• Choose a location- either small country (eg Vietnam), or region (
Brazil rainforest, Alpine ski resort, desert- Ayres rock or city (Venice,
Barcelona)
• What are the key issues- eg air pollution, water pollution, waste,
water shortages, damage to cultural sites, lack of energy sources,
food shortages. etc
• Solutions: what are your recommendations for future growth- eg
stopping tourism is not possible.
• Relevant readings: 3.1,3.2,3.3
• Supplementary readings: week 3

Sustainable development is about people. Justify the
influence of key stakeholders to create positive change
within a hotel organization.
• Key stakeholders include: staff, customers, shareholders
(owners), suppliers.
• How do you create positive change? Think about staffhow would you be motivated?
• Relevant readings: 9.1, 9.2, 9.3,10.2, 10.3,12.1,12.2.
• Supplementary readings: week 9
